Bayous

My beautiful two year-old granddaughter Haven is a cheeky little monkey with a devilish sense of humor. She has created her own secret language. Her name for hat is “bayou.” She loves to tease her “Da” by calling him “Yeh Yeh” (the Chinese word for grandfather!) She has a Tasmanian Devil stuffed toy at her Emaw’s house that she calls “Momma.”

Emaw’s Japanese friend, Mickey, was visiting the other day. Emaw told Mickey about Haven’s secret language. Emaw picked up Haven’s pink Barbie cap and said, “Put on your bayou for Mickey Haven.” Haven looked at Emaw, rolled her eyes and said in an exasperated tone, “That’s a hat Emaw.” Mickey fell off the couch roaring with laughter…

Canny

My two year-old granddaughter, Haven, is fond of Reese’s Miniature Peanut Butter Cups (a fondness that she shares with her Emaw). Her name for the Peanut Butter Cups is “canny.” Haven’s Poppa gave her a piece of partially melted canny. Instead of putting the canny in her mouth, she mushed it between her little hands and spread it on both cheeks and down the front of her blouse. Emaw promptly hustled her into the bathroom for her second bath of the day…
